Store Builds

Shopify vs. WooCommerce: Which Platform Is Right for Your Store in 2026?

Every ecommerce build starts with the same question: Shopify or WooCommerce? We've built and managed stores on both platforms for over a decade, and the honest answer is that neither one is universally "better." The right choice depends on where your business is today and where you want it to go.

The core difference

Shopify is a fully hosted platform. You pay a monthly fee, and Shopify handles hosting, security, uptime, and most of the technical maintenance for you. WooCommerce is a free plugin that turns a WordPress site into a store — which means you (or your agency) own the hosting, updates, and security.

That single distinction drives almost every other decision on this list.

When Shopify is the right call

Shopify tends to be the better fit when:

  • You want to launch fast and don't want to think about servers, plugins, or updates.
  • You're planning to scale quickly and need reliable uptime during high-traffic moments like product drops or holiday sales.
  • You want access to a massive app ecosystem for things like subscriptions, upsells, and loyalty programs without custom development.
  • Your team is lean and you'd rather pay a predictable monthly fee than manage technical overhead.

Most of the direct-to-consumer brands we manage — especially ones running frequent paid ad campaigns — land on Shopify because the platform is built to handle traffic spikes without breaking.

When WooCommerce is the right call

WooCommerce tends to make more sense when:

  • You already have a WordPress site with content, SEO equity, or a blog you don't want to migrate.
  • You want full ownership of your code and data, with no platform transaction fees.
  • Your product catalog or checkout flow needs highly custom logic that's easier to build directly into WordPress.
  • You're comfortable (or have a partner who's comfortable) managing hosting and plugin updates.

We often recommend WooCommerce to service-based businesses expanding into ecommerce, or to brands with an existing content-driven WordPress site that already ranks well in Google.

What actually matters more than the platform

Here's the part most guides skip: the platform is maybe 20% of whether your store succeeds. The other 80% is what happens after launch — how your product pages are structured, whether your checkout is optimized, how fast the site loads, and whether you have marketing infrastructure (email, SMS, ads) actually driving traffic to convert.

We've seen beautifully built Shopify stores with zero traffic strategy sit stagnant, and we've seen scrappy WooCommerce builds outperform because the marketing behind them was relentless and well-tracked.

How we help clients decide

When a new client comes to us trying to choose, we look at three things: your existing tech stack, your growth timeline, and your internal technical capacity. From there we make a clear recommendation — no platform bias, no upsell agenda, just what will actually work for your business.

If you're mid-decision, book time with Trevor and Kristin and we'll walk through your specific situation. And if you already know which platform you want, our Shopify/WooCommerce build add-on gets you a fully custom, conversion-ready storefront for a flat $3,500 — on top of any Growth Plan or Channel Package.
